ADHD Medication Service

Medication can be hugely helpful for difficulties related to ADHD.

Most of the medication used in the UK for the treatment of ADHD are stimulants that help your brain function better, so you don’t have to work so hard to stay focussed.

Because they are stumulants, they are classed as controlled medications. That’s why we take every step to ensure that medication is the right option for you.

Who Can Have ADHD Medications?

Neurospectrum Clients who have:

Been diagnosed with ADHD by Neurospectrum and have had your first diagnostic appointment.
Had a Treatment Consultation to assess their current difficulties and perform a comprehensive psychological and social well-being assessment to ensure considering ADHD medication is safe and appropriate.
Given consent for us to request a Medical Summary from your GP.
Been discussed at our Senior Treatment Team meeting, and we feel that ADHD medication is an appropriate option for them.
Had an Treatment Consultation with a qualified Clinician, which includes a physical examination. We can initiate medication if we deem it safe and appropriate

When are ADHD Medications Not Appropriate?

We cannot prescribe medication if:

You have not been diagnosed with ADHD by Neurospectrum.
You are experiencing severe mental health difficulties, high-risk behaviours or substance abuse.
You have a history of specific heart problems, including uncontrolled high blood pressure or uninvestigated palpitations.
You have a condition sensitive to stimulants, including glaucoma, phaeochromocytoma or thyrotoxicosis.
You haven’t consented to us accessing your GP Medical Summary, or not given accurate information during consultations with us.
For any other reason, we do not feel that medication is currently appropriate and safe for you

Our ADHD Medication Pathway

Initiation Appointment
In this appointment, we will review your GP summary with you, further explore your reasons for trying medication and undertake a physical examination.
During the appointment, we will record your height, weight, pulse, and blood pressure and listen to your heart and lungs.
We will then discuss the risks and benefits of ADHD medication with you and answer any of your questions. If it is agreed that you should proceed, you will be given a prescription for the medication and written guidance on what to do should you experience any side effects.
Review Appointment
We require you to attend review appointments to see how you are responding to your medication.
This session will include discussing your ADHD symptoms and any possible side effects and monitoring your blood pressure, pulse and weight.
Review appointments will continue until you are stable on medication with satisfactory improvement in functioning. If your GP agrees, we can hand over prescribing to them under Shared Care

Cost and Availability of ADHD Medication

With a private prescription, you will need to pay for the total cost of the medicine plus a dispensing fee, which covers the pharmacy’s costs.

The pharmacy will calculate the total cost, which you or your medical insurance company will pay. The cost of different ADHD medications varies and is subject to change.

When working with you, we will include this information to decide which medication will be best for you. Due to multiple factors, including increased awareness and diagnosis of ADHD, there can be issues with the availability of several commonly prescribed medications. Much of this is out of our control, but we will ensure you remain informed about any shortages that may impact your treatment
